Curious about how teeth implants work, how much they cost, and what the process involves? Read on to find out all you need to know.

We were watching late-night TV recently, and enjoying a range of fantastic music from the vaults of the BBC. We won’t give away our age by telling you the names of the acts that featured, but suffice it to say that one of them was The Pogues.

It’s impossible to imagine The Pogues without their charismatic front-man, Shane McGowan. And though he’s rightly famous for writing some of the greatest lovesongs of our generation (Rainy Night In Soho – need we say more?), he’s also locked in the public consciousness as being ‘that dentally challenged guy’.

And yes, we have to admit, the smile was less than perfect. This set us thinking, of course, as to how much we value a smile in our contemporary society. We see popstars, actors – even politicians – investing in dental treatment to make sure that everythign is in order. And the reason, of course, is that we tend to react to people bases on the quality of their smile – not just how warm and sincere it is, but also how healthy it is from a dental point of view.

And this is probably the main reason why our surgery here is kept busy each week with a long line of patients seeking dental implants – or teeth implants, as they are sometimes known.

What’s an implant, and how does it work?

The title ‘dental implant’ is a bit of a misnomer and often causes confusion on the part of prospective patients. They regard it as some form of denture that’s implanted directly into the jawbone. Sush an approach simply wouldn’t work, so instead, your dentist uses a more cunning form of dental engineering to give you a replacement tooth that will last a lifetime.

The term ‘implant’ actually relates to a miniature ‘stake’ which your dentist fixes deep into your jawbone. Just like building a fence, this is the element that provides all the solidiity. On top of this, your dentist fixes the replacement tooth.

The net effect is that you have a tooth that will simply not move – no matter what foods you eat, how loud you laugh etc. This is a huge development compared to dentures, which are all too prone to move out of place at the most inopportune or embarrassing of times.

Another advantage compared to dentures is that you don't take your implant out at night to clean it – you simply brush you rteeth as normal and your implant will be fully cleaned and maintained in the process. With proper care, it should last you a lifetime.

Even better news is that teeth implants prices in Dublin are much more affordable than you may have thought. Why? Because the process is now highly streamlined, involving less of your dentist’s time.

Don’t be tempted to go down the dental tourism route.

So-called cheap dental implants are widely advertised in various parts of Europe, but you need to be very wary of these offers which sound far too good to be true.
