Looking for the full story on how a dental implant can work wonders for you gap-threatened smile? Here’s all you need to know.

One of the things we like most about working in the dental business is something very simple – but something that’s often taken for granted.

We’re talking about how good it feels when a patient walks out of our surgery with a huge smile on their face, and you know instinctively that you’ve just made a major difference to their life.

Sometimes, this can be a very mundane matter. For example, they may come into the surgery with a toothache, and leave twenty minutes later with a new filling and the pain disappeared.

But at other times, we work bigger miracles for our patients. They may present with a missing tooth – or sometimes a number of missing teeth – and become so self-conscious about how this affects their appearance that they simply stop smiling.

A quick, affordable and efficient treatment

This is an appalling way to go through life, and is highly disruptive and highly limiting to their day-to-day lives. Thankfully, once they've spoken to us about the problem, we’re able to reassure them immediately that we can sort the problem, quickly, efficiently and affordably.

The magic bullet, in this case is a treatment called dental implants – also referred to as teeth implants. The ‘engineeering’ behind the solution is quite simple – but brilliantly effective. It involves inserting a miniature stake quite deep into your jawbone, and using this as the structure onto which your dentist will place a replacement tooth.

The replacement tooth is locked onto the stake using a special sort of dental cement. Once this has set fully, it forms a lifetime bond that simply won't be broken – regardless of what you choose to eat or chew with your new implant.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Quite a few, as it happens. Firstly, unlike dentures, they are not going to slip out of place and potentially embarrass you in a social or business situation.

Secondly, they’re immeasurably more comfortable to wear compared to dentures. Our patients tell us time and again that they very quickly forget they're even wearing implants.

Another benefit is that they look highly authentic. Your dentist will file the replacement tooth so that it fits in exactly with the surrounding teeth. He can even colour it so that it fits in perfectly with the rest of your gnashers.

Are implants very expensive?

You might think so – because it’s a relatively new dental technology. The truth, however, is that the cost of dental implants is very manageable, as we’ve streamlined the process to a huge degree, and can therefore charge our patients less. And remember that tooth implants last you a lifetime, so they represent tremendous value for money when you work out the cost per year of happy smiling!

What about going abroad?

If you’ve seen those ads for cheap dental implants in a number of European centres, we’d urge you to think twice. Here’s a very sobering article from the Irish Dental Association on this topic – http://www.dentist.ie/latest-news/the-dangers-of-dental-tourism-.6556.html
