Not only are root canals relatively pain-free, but they also cost a fraction of what they used to. Here’s why.

We were having a quiet pint with a number of friends recently when the topic came around to “the most painful thing EVER”. Needless to say, there were differences of opinion. The ladies present were fairly certain that the answer was childbirth. There was also some support for kidney stones, which is apparently quite excruciating.

But what really surprised us was that quite a few of those present believed that a root canal was the most painful thing that could afflict you – even though most of them had never had a root canal themselves.

It continues to annoy us – and amaze us – that there is still so much distrust out there for a process which is as free of pain as any normal dental treatment. And with root canal cost dropping so sharply in recent times, more and more people are opting to have the procedure, so more people than ever can now tell you definitively that it’s not the form of punishment that some would have you believe.

Okay then, tell me the full story.

First of all, let’s talk about the upside of root canals. Quite simply, they represent an amazingly effective form of treatment, capable of saving a tooth that might otherwise be coming to the end of life.

Perhaps some of the bad press that root canals receive is because you will spend longer in the dentist’s chair. Normally, there will be two visits to the dentist, each of around an hour’s duration.

This simply represents the fact that there is quite a lot of delicate and intricate work to be carried out, but this doesn't mean that it's painful. And remember that you will be fully anaesthetised throughout the procedure, so it’s nor more painful than having a filling, for example.

And because the dentist works on the affected area for longer than usual, you may have some mild discomfort for a day or so, but you can address this very easily with some over-the-counter painkillers. After that, you’ll forget that you’ve even had any work done, as the restored tooth feels exactly like a normal tooth.

Once the anaesthetic had worn off, the area around the root canal was a little tender, but some over-the-counter painkillers sorted this easily for the next day or two. And after that, it was as if we’d never been to the dentist – except for the fact that we now had a fully functioning tooth again.

Are they very expensive?

You might be tempted to think that a treatment that takes two visits of an hour each might cost you a lot of money. Not so, however. Root canal treatment cost has dropped very significantly in recent years as a result of greater streamlining. And here at MyDental, you can make the process even more affordable by availing of our 0% Dental Finance Plan.

If you're in the market for root canal treatment Dublin is a great place, with a range of excellent dentists who can offer exceptional service – including our good selves at MyDental, of course.
