Root canals – the naked truth.

Root canals are worthy of our praise – not our fear. Here’s why.

We’ve written many times in the past about the fact that your teeth have been designed by nature to last you a lifetime. Somewhere along the line, a mistaken belief has cropped up that says you’re doing well if you hold on to your teeth until your sixties or seventies.

This is not true. And think about it for a minute and you’ll see that we’re right. Your teeth are covered in a super-tough substance called enamel, which is well capable of outliving even bone.

The spirit of this mistaken myth is neatly captured in this quote from Helen Rowland: A man loses his illusions first, his teeth second, and his follies last.” The fact of the matter is that a man should go to the grave complete with a full set of teeth.

In the dentistry profession, we believe this with absolute sincerity – especially as we have so many fantastic tools at our disposal to make sure that missing teeth eventually becomes a thing of the past.

And one of the most powerful tools for salvaging teeth is a root canal procedure. It’s normally used as a last resort – when the patient is otherwise looking at an extraction. And in case you have been sucked into the mistaken belief that a root canal is a big deal in terms of pain or discomfort, let us assure you that this is absolutely not the case.

Part of the reason that people believe this is that the procedure takes quite a while. There are two visits involved, each of around an hour. But remember that you are fully anaesthetised through the entire process, so you will feel little or nothing that’s going on inside your mouth.

And in case you think that we’re just pushing the party line, let us assure you that we’ve had this procedure ourselves, so we know what we’re talking about. The only real discomfort we felt was a little tenderness around the affected area after the procedure. This was easily remedied by a few over-the-counter painkillers.

Is it an expensive procedure?

As it takes two visits to the dentist, you might be tempted to believe that it would cost a small fortune. Not so, however. When it comes to root canal cost Ireland is a great place to source treatment, and nowhere will you find better value than here at MyDental.

And remember that you can spread the cost over multiple months when you avail of our 0% Dental Finance Plan. This means that you don’t have to fork out a single cheque at the time of treatment.

And just in case you’re thinking of going abroad for treatment, let us assure you that if you’re worried about root canal treatment cost Ireland is much more affordable than overseas locations – especially when you factor in the cost of travel, accommodation and subsistence.
