In just six months, that crooked or overcrowded smile can be totally transformed. Here’s how.

As we write this blog, we’re coming into the last few days before Christmas, and the sense of excitement seems to be growing by the minute – especially if you have some ‘little ones’ in the home.

It seems that the only topic of conversation for the past month or so has been “What are you getting from Santa/”, and the answers have comprised a bewildering array of toys and gadgets – many of which we’ve never even heard of.

But one of the more unusual Christmas gifts that will be left under the Christmas tree this year will be a beautiful smile. How so, you may ask!

Well, about a month ago, one of our regular patients dropped into us and asked about the cost of invisible braces for his 23-year-old daughter. We know the young lady in question, as she’s also a patient of ours, and she has a fairly severe case of overcrowding.

She’s been very conscious of the crooked nature of her smile, and this year, her very kind Dad decided that he would do something about it. So, in short, he bought a voucher for her which he plans to present over the family dinner.

We have to admit that it's a fantastic idea for a present, as it will literally have an impact on her for the rest of her life. Can you imagine the excitement as he tells her that she’ll have a fantastic straight smile by the middle of 2017?

And yes, that’s how long it takes these days – just six months. This is a far cry from the bad old days when patients had to wear their braces for two years or more.

And that’s not the only thing that’s changed in the world of invisible braces. The price has also tumbled dramatically. This is because the patient now spends a lot less time in the dental surgery, so the costs for professional attendances shrink accordingly.

There are also some important structural benefits that the newer braces offer. They’re much lighter, for example, and made from material that exerts a lot less pressure on the teeth and gums. This means that they are much more comfortable to wear, and patients often tell us that they soon forget they're even wearing them.

This doesn’t mean, however, that they're any less sturdy or reliable than the old ‘train tracks’. They’ll confidently tackle any foodstuffs that you care to throw at them, so you don't have to adopt any special dietary regimes when you're wearing them.

Another bit of good news is that when it comes to fitting of invisible braces Dublin can hold its own with any other location in the world as a centre of excellence. There are some seriously talented dentists in the Greater Dublin Area, and that includes our good selves, of course.

And don't forget that we offer the highest ethical and professional standards at all times, and conduct our business in accordance with the Code of Practice of the Irish Dental Council - (http://www.dentalcouncil.ie/g_dentalethics.php)
