Ultra Thin Veneers

Ultra Thin Veneers – The latest breakthrough in dental veneers

Until relatively recently, veneers were a fairly one-dimensional product, but all that’s changed with the arrival of Ultra Thin Veneers – also referred to as Non-prep veneers.

These new veneers are so thin that our dentist can bond them directly onto the surface of the front teeth. Because they are so thin the teeth do not have to be shaved which means that there’s no drilling involved – so no anaesthetic either. It also means that your original teeth are left untouched. To give you an idea of how thin they are, think of a contact lens – it really is the last work in discreet treatment.

But while ultra thin veneers might lack bulk, they definitely don't lack strength – you can trust them completely for eating, biting and all the normal chores that your teeth carry out for you.

So if you're one of those people who’s not too keen on the dentist’s drill – or the dentist’s needle – then maybe this is the treatment for YOU?

What is a Veneer?

Dental Veneer

A veneer is a thin layer of material placed over a tooth surface, either to improve the look of a tooth, or to protect a damaged tooth surface.

There are three main types of material used to make a veneer: composite, dental porcelain veneer and Ultra Thin veneer. A composite veneer can be directly placed (built-up in the mouth), or indirectly fabricated by a dental technician in a dental laboratory, and later bonded to the tooth using a resin cements. In contrast, a Porcelain veneer can only be made by a technican in a laboratory.

A veneer made from porcelain is the most preferred type, with the Ultra Thin Veneer even more preferable as it eliminates the need to shave your tooth before affixing. The Ultra Thin Veneer is so thin it can be adhered to your tooth directly with any prep work.

Porcelain veneers are ideal for creating beautiful smiles in cases of small, oddly shaped, spaced or discoloured teeth. With this procedure you will be involved directly in your own design process in reshaping, widening and brightening your smile, thus ensuring total satisfaction.

Your dentist can place temporary bonding for 2-3 weeks to protect your teeth and create the blueprint for your smile.

What should I expect during my treatment?

The Procedure

Ultra Thin Veneers

You’ll normally have to visit us three times – once for your initial consultation and OPG X-ray, once for your impression / intra-oral scan and once for the preparation of your teeth and fourth to fit the veneer. During the initial consultation, we will examine your teeth to make sure that they are suited to dental veneers.

On the final visit, the new veneer will be bonded to the tooth, and any adjustments can be made at that stage in the chair.

Porcelain Veneers

You’ll normally have to visit us four times – once for your initial consultation and OPG X-ray, once for your impression  / intra-oral scan and once for the preparation of your teeth and fourth to fit the veneer. During the initial consultation, we will examine your teeth to make sure that they are suited to dental veneers.

On your third visit, we remove approximately half a millimeter of enamel from the surface of your tooth – which is equal to the width of the new veneer to be fitted. The veneer is actually made in the laboratory by a dental technician.

On the final visit, the new veneer will be bonded to the tooth, and any adjustments can be made at that stage in the chair.

How do I take care of my veneer?

Taking Care of your Veneer

You can significantly prolong the life of your veneer by adopting a good dental hygiene routine, including regular brushing and flossing. You don't need to brush the veneer any differently than your normal teeth.

Remember that dental decay can still occur to the base tooth (under the veneer), so don't be tempted to relax your care regime. Be particularly alert to the presence of plaque, as this can signal the onset of serious problems for your veneer.
