If you're missing a tooth – or maybe even more than one – then dental implants could be the answer to all your prayers. Here’s the full lowdown.

Be honest – have you ever seen someone missing a prominent tooth and thought to yourself that it took the gloss off their smile? Most of us have, and it’s easy to see why. When people smile at us, we’re hardwired to respond by observing their smile – both in their eyes and in their mouth.

And that’s probably why we’ve had so many patients over the years who were looking for a solution, wanting to restore the full spectrum of their smile. In essence, there are two possible solutions – dentures or dental implants (also known as teeth implants).

Merging dentures and implants

It’s also possible, of course, to amalgamate these two treatments. Some of our patients choose to use them in tandem with implants, in fact. This might be a case having implants in a more highly prominent section of your smile, and using lower cost dentures in some of the less visible area. Another way of mixing and matching is to have implants on top and dentures on the bottom row.

Let’s assume for the purpose of this article, however, that you’re set on the more permanent nature of implants. What are the advantages of implants – and how are they used by your dentist?

Well first of all, we should dispel some myths about implants. Some people wrongly assume that some form of artificial tooth is fixed into the bone or gum. This simply wouldn’t last and would fail to sustain any reasonable pressure.

Instead, the implanted element is a tiny stake which your dentist fixes deep into your bone. The artificial tooth then fits snugly over the stake, thus forming a very strong and very robust solution that will face up to any challenge you care to throw at it.

What are the main benefits from dental implant treatment?

  • If you know anyone who’s had dentures in the past, you might have heard them complain that they can sometimes slip out of place, which can be very embarrassing in social situations. Implants, on the other hand, simply can’t move in your mouth, so there’s simply no danger of being embarrassed.
  • A second benefit is in the area of aesthetics. Your dentist can file the replacement tooth so that it’s a perfect match for the tooth that it’s replacing. He can even colour it so that it exactly matches the surrounding teeth. When your dentist has worked his magic, simply nobody will spot that one of your teeth is not totally natural.
  • Another reason to go down the implants road is the additional comfort that you can expect. We’re not exaggerating when we say that after the first few days of having your new implant fitted, you’ll simply forget that it's there – that’s how natural it feels in your mouth.
  • Last but definitely not least, there’s the issue of cost. Teeth implants prices in Dublin are immeasurably more affordable than you may have thought. And they're even more affordable at MyDental in Dublin thanks to our fantastic 0% Dental Finance Plan. It allows you to spread the cost of your treatment over three, six or nine months.

What about getting cheap dental implants abroad?

You’d need to be blind to miss those press and TV ads for dental treatment overseas – ostensibly at lower prices than you could expect here in Ireland.

You need to be extremely careful if you’re considering this route. First of all, you have to take the total cost into account, including treatment, flights, accommodation, meals etc.

Then, what happens if there are any post-treatment issues? Do you have to go back to the overseas destination again?
