The Christmas holidays are over, so it’s goodbye to those sugary foods and lazy days watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Today is a good day to promise yourself that you’ll get back to a proper dental care regime.

Okay, we’ve all been guilty of it! Eating more chocolates in one week than we’d eat in the rest of the year. Or indulging in sweet or sugary drinks as part of the inevitable ‘Christmas hospitality’.

But now that we’re all back to work, it’s time to make sure that you get back into the good dental care habits that you observe throughout the rest of the year.

Why is dental health so important?

Just think about it for a minute. You use your mouth for a whole variety of things that you really don’t want to give up. Eating and drinking, for example, or kissing or smiling, or playing the tin whistle or singing. And let’s not forget breathing!

It all happens with the help of your mouth, so it’s something of a no-brainer to say that you should do everything possible to protect your mouth – both externally and internally.

You’ll get a payback many times over if you get back into the proper habits. Good breath, for example, means that you’ll be a lot nicer to be around.

It will also help avoid gum disease and dental caries, which are so common among many modern societies as a result of poor diet or poor dental care regimes. And don’t forget that many studies indicate a direct link between gum disease and heart attacks or strokes – so a healthy mouth can pay off in ways you never even imagined.

What other problems can I avoid with a good dental care regime?

There are numerous serious conditions that arise from poor dental care habits. Erosion of teeth is one such problem, and is often linked to the rising amount of fizzy drinks that we consume.

Oral cancer is another frightening result of a poor dental care regime – particularly a lack of visits to the dentist. Your dentist is trained to spot the telltale signs of oral cancer, so resolve not to put off that dentist’s visit any longer if you’ve been a stranger in the past year or so.

It’s easier than you think to take care of your mouth

With regular brushing and flossing (or use of interdental brushes), you can do an awful lot to make sure that your mouth is one of the healthiest parts of your whole body.

But you should also make sure that regular dental visits are part of your regime, as an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure.

As far back as 1948, the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/en/) issued this definition of general health:

“A complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being, and not just the absence of infirmity.”

If we take this definition onboard when it comes to our oral health, wouldn’t it be fantastic to head into 2015 with an ambition of having actively good oral health rather than just the absence of dental ailments?

And as we’re very fond of telling our patients, toothpaste costs a lot less than the cost of teeth implants or other serious dental treatment.

Wouldn’t you rather put that tooth implant cost towards a good holiday? Well you can – simply by making sure that you never have to shell out for serious dental treatment. So come on – let’s get serious about our teeth again now that the Christmas is over!
